    Leadership Program and Structure

During the summer of 2021, it became very apparent that the training and structure that was being used at Sandy Cove was not meeting the needs of individuals who were coming to serve at camp. Specifically, the younger workers who are not only training for ministry but transitioning from camper to worker. At this same time, One Hope Canada has established Learning Outcomes for our camp leaders to equip them to be discipled “for living and serving through His Church”. For those two reasons and more, the leadership structure at Sandy Cove Bible Camp is being intentionally designed to the Three Step Structure found below.

Step 1: LIT Program – Leader in Training (minimum 13 or going into grade 8)

Who are they? Our LITs are the grease that keeps the gears of camp moving. They do many of the “dirty jobs” that need to be done so camp can operate. They wash dishes, mop floors, clean the bathrooms, and do general maintenance all around. In between those times, we want to give back to them through continuing their discipleship with LIT-specific programming. LITs will get to have their own group times in Bible Study, discussion, and fun activity times. This will all be led by the LIT Mentor(s), whose sole focus is to work with and lead the LIT Team. There is no charge for this training. LITs receive $2/day toward their Treat Hut account and $100 off their week of camp for completing the two weeks of training.
In 2024 the LIT Program will be broken into two Teams of six to accommodate increased interest. Team 1 runs during Canada Day Family Weekend, Pee Wee, and Junior Camps. This team is for first year LITs and/or those who wish to attend Middle School Camp. Team 2 is for returning LITs and runs during Middle School and Quest Camps.

Step 2: Assistant Leader (minimum 15 or going into grade 10)

Who are they? Our Assistant Leaders are those who have more life and ministry experience than our LITs. If they have been around SCBC or another camp, then they may have been an LIT. They attend the full week of Summer Missionary Training and maybe even complete some One Hope Canada Online Training. Their areas of service while at Sandy Cove could be as an Assistant Cabin Leader or on the Work Team. They may even specialize as an Assistant Lifeguard during swim times and serve in one of the other areas the rest of their time. They will serve more independently than the LITs but still by the side of a Leader. Assistant Leaders receive an honorarium per week, set each year. All those 16 and older can also raise personal support through the Summer Missionary Assistance Program.

Step 3: Leader (minimum 17 or going into grade 12)

Who are they? Our Leaders are our Core Team members whose ministry is to lead others at camp. They have already served at a camp or another job or ministry where they have gained experience in leadership and skills vital to the running of camp. They complete Online Training before arriving at camp, attend the week of Summer Missionary Training, and may even be asked to help lead a session. Their areas of service and responsibility continue to increase from those of the Assistant Leaders. They could be a Cabin Leader, the Summer Program Leader, the LIT Mentor, the Maintenance Leader, or Lifeguard.

Leader positions are paid either through Sandy Cove’s budget or grants awarded by the province of New Brunswick. Both pay the hourly minimum wage of NB ($14.75 in 2024) for 35 hours per week. Sandy Cove’s paid positions are for a maximum of nine weeks, grant paid positions can be up to 12 weeks, depending on what is awarded. Leaders can also raise personal financial support through the Summer Missionary Assistance Program in addition to their pay (up to $221 or $346 in 2024 depending on their position).
Leaders are required to recruit a Prayer Support Team of at least ten individuals who will commit to pray for them regularly as they serve at Sandy Cove

    Volunteers

Who are they? They are the individuals who fill specific roles at camp for an hour, a day, a week, or throughout the summer that aren’t filled by other Summer Missionaries. They may serve in the kitchen, drive a boat, or look after camper registration. Our Health Officer is one such position filled by volunteers each summer.

    Summer Missionary Training

One Hope Canada and Sandy Cove Bible Camp have required training for all workers which means that Training is a requirement for all. It is also a time for our Summer Team to grow in unity and prepare for our specific ministry.

Summer Missionary Training dates will be confirmed with you in your acceptance letter. They are held in two stages, Leaders and Assistant Leaders arrive first (June 21st - 26th), then LITs (June 24th - 26th). Pre-arrival online courses are required for some positions.
